Early December: Local Picks and Our First Field Notes

December hits the Potomac and Bethesda area with fuller calendars, brighter storefronts, and a surprising amount of action hiding close to home. The kind of week where you look up and realize there’s more happening nearby than you thought.

If you made it to anything from last week, we'd love to hear how it went. Email anytime at [email protected].

☕ A mystery photo waits at the end. First correct guess wins a coffee on us.

THIS WEEK’S TOP PICKS

Three picks for a week that feels easy, inspired, and well spent.

🥟 TGW Field Notes: Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings — long wait, good company, and baskets worth the steam.
🎻 Contra Dance Evening — simple steps, live music, Friday energy that carries.
🎄 Kensington Antique Row Holiday Open House — porch lights, open doors, and a gentle December wander.

🎭 SEE

Art, stage, and sound worth leaving the house for.

📚 Francene Hill Book Release

Mon, Dec 8, 7–8:30 PM | The Writer’s Center, Bethesda

Hill stitches family histories with the kind of findings that surface only in attic boxes and forgotten envelopes. She’s shaped that instinct at Moth StorySLAMs, and the new book carries the same clean line. A quiet, well-made Monday for people who like true stories told simply.
A quiet Monday done right.

🎶 Jay Byrd at The Grove

Thursdays, 5–8 PM | The Grove, Potomac

Americana runs deep in Jay Byrd’s work, shaped by early blues-rock bands, D.C. years, and songwriting accolades from NewSong and MASC. He’s opened for Little Feat and Chely Wright, shared stages with Steve Winwood, and brings that mileage to a Thursday dinner hour in Potomac—a small room that attracts real experience.
A lighter lift than cooking.

🍺 ilyAIMY at 7 Locks Brewing

Sat, Dec 6, 6–9 PM | 7 Locks Brewing, Rockville

ilyAIMY brings the kind of “jolt in folk” that lands somewhere between Nickel Creek on crack and Rusted Root with a metal edge. It fits 7 Locks’ warehouse taproom: award-winning beers, easy parking, food trucks in orbit, and a crowd that shows up for sound with some personality.
Grab a pint and stay awhile.

🎹 David Foster & Katharine McPhee

TGW Heads Up
Wed, Feb 4, 2026, 8 PM | Strathmore, N. Bethesda

Foster’s catalog shaped entire decades, and McPhee brings the Broadway polish you remember from Idol and Smash. A night that stays comfortably familiar in the best way—architects of your background music, finally in the same room, telling you how it came together. $28-$108.
One to put on the calendar.

🍷 TASTE

Good flavor, better company — places worth lingering this week

Four of six soup dumplings at Nan Xiang—we ate two before anyone thought to take a picture.

🥟 TGW Field Notes: Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings with Friends

The Good Week and friends went on Saturday evening and pulled #69 on the waitlist — a full two-hour wait, but the kind that works in your favor. You can wander the mall, shop, sit with a drink, or just catch up with friends without watching the clock. By the time your number pops up, you’re already in weekend mode.

Nan Xiang is a Michelin-recommended spot, which explains both the buzz and the pace. It works best as a group outing: friends to share baskets, friends to make the wait feel social instead of slow. Once you’re waved in, the steamers stack fast. The classic pork soup dumplings are the anchor, but there are plenty of non-pork and vegetarian options. It’s an easy place to bring a mixed-preference group; everyone finds their lane quickly.

Plenty of variety to share—pan-fried dumplings, crispy noodles, and reasons to order one more round.

Soup dumplings take a little technique — lift from the knot, settle it into the spoon, give it a beat, then the nip-sip-bite routine. Slow enough to save your shirt, quick enough to keep pace with the table.

The move: Go with a few friends, expect a long wait, and treat that time as part of the outing. When your table’s ready, it all clicks — mild chaos, plenty of fun, and genuinely worth it.

🥟 Date Night: Dim Sum Delicacies

Thu, Jan 16, 4–6 PM | Sur La Table, North Bethesda

If your appetite was sparked by The Good Week’s Field Notes trip to Nan Xiang, here’s your chance to learn the hands-on part. This small-group class walks you through shaping soup dumplings, folding wontons with a little confidence, and building a simple bok choy side while sipping milk tea. It’s a fun, low-stakes way to turn “I should learn how to do this” into something you can actually try at home. $99.
A good pick to book early.

Try a new step.

This donation-based class supports the Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation, and the studio is also collecting new winter coats and cold-weather gear for local families. Come for the movement, stay for the feeling that you showed up for yourself and your community.

Mon, Dec 8, 6–9 PM | The Woodworkers Club, Rockville

Shape something you’ll be proud of.

📚 Pop Culture Book Club

Wed, Dec 10, 6:30 PM | Kensington Row Bookshop, Kensington

A monthly circle for readers who move quickly—or want a deadline that helps. This round: Lovelight Farms, a cozy fake-dating romp with raccoons, missing shipments, and a tree farm trying its best. Easy to finish, fun to talk about.
Add it to your stack.
