Book lovers have several reasons to keep reading this issue: a month-long NaNoWriMo writing series in Bethesda, a Mystery Book Club taking on Liz Moore’s The God of the Woods, and a Book Lovers Craft Night at the Rio with coloring, bookmarks, book swapping, and plenty of bookish conversation. A Lot to Look Forward To, Close to Home
I’m so excited about this issue of The Good Week that I want to get right into it. There’s a lot happening across Potomac, Bethesda, Rockville, and nearby, from seasonal events to holiday outings and local shopping.
I’m especially excited about the markets, artist shows, galleries, and independent shops popping up for the season, with everything from original art and vintage finds to handmade gifts and one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t see everywhere else. It’s a chance to find something that feels personal while supporting local artists and small businesses.
I’ve started gathering those finds into a new Good Week holiday guide, linked in this week’s Top Pick below. I’ll keep adding to it throughout the season.
✨ THIS ISSUE’S TOP PICK
🎁 Start Your Holiday Shopping at a Show by Bethesda’s Art Teachers
Opening reception Friday, November 13, 5–8 pm | Emma’s Art Studio, Bethesda
If you’d like to give gifts this year that you won’t find in any store, start here. Emma’s Art Studio’s A Winter Salon fills the studio with original work for sale, and the artists have a twist: they’re the teachers who usually lead the classes there, and this time their own work is on the walls.
At the opening reception, meet the artists, enjoy complimentary wine and refreshments, and buy straight from the people who made the work. The show runs through January 8, so there’s time to come back.
👉 Plan your gift-shopping stop at A Winter Salon
🎨 More local gifts coming: The Good Week’s new Holiday Markets & Local Artist Shows Guide is where I’ll be adding artists’ holiday shows and markets all season, so you can find distinctive gifts and support independent makers close to home.
Plus: Champagne with a chef’s tasting menu, beetles with a Smithsonian scientist, a spooky candle workshop, DIY ceramic ornaments, a crafty book swap, beginner-friendly mountain biking, and more, all close to home.

Thursday, October 29, 6–7:30 pm | Amy Kaslow Gallery, Bethesda TONIGHT
Amy Kaslow Gallery is bringing together artist Joan Danziger and Smithsonian entomologist Floyd Shockley for a conversation inspired by Danziger’s Beetlemania! exhibition. Danziger’s jewel-toned sculptures celebrate the strange beauty and variety of beetles, while Shockley brings the science, from the hundreds of thousands of known species to the outsized role beetles play in healthy ecosystems.
The dialogue explores why humans have been fascinated by beetles for centuries, from sacred scarabs to fireflies to the Volkswagen Beetle. Danziger’s exhibition remains on view through November 8.
