THE GOOD WEEK GUIDES
8 Independent Bookstores to Explore Around Bethesda, Rockville & Nearby
Independent bookstores, used-book treasure hunts, comics, French literature and one bookstore that comes to you.

When you picture an independent bookstore, you might think of a place like Wonderland Books in Bethesda: a welcoming neighborhood shop with new releases, book clubs, author events and shelves that make it very easy to stay longer than planned.
But independent bookstores around here come in a lot more forms than that.
There’s a two-story shop tucked into Kensington’s Antique Row, a bookstore devoted to French-language titles, another specializing in books and maps from Central and Eastern Europe, a Rockville warehouse with roughly half a million books, a longtime comic shop and even a bookstore on wheels.
Some you may already know. Others you may have passed without realizing quite what was inside.
So whether you’re looking for your next novel, an old favorite, a graphic novel, something in another language or simply a good place to wander for a while, here are the independent bookstores to know around Bethesda, Rockville and nearby.
📚 BETHESDA
Wonderland Books

For longtime Bethesda book lovers, Wonderland Books fills a very specific gap.
Barnes & Noble spent more than two decades at Bethesda Row before closing in 2018, and its former three-story space became Anthropologie later that year. Downtown Bethesda then went several years without a traditional bookstore until Wonderland Books opened on Norfolk Avenue in 2024.
Today, the shop carries new fiction, nonfiction, children’s books and gifts, along with a regular lineup of author events, book clubs and other gatherings.
Find it: Downtown Bethesda
What you’ll find: New books, children’s books, literary gifts, book clubs and author events.
Big Planet Comics
You may not immediately think of a comic shop when you hear “independent bookstore,” but comics and graphic novels are very much part of the literary landscape.
They tell stories through words and images, spanning everything from memoir and history to fantasy, journalism, humor and literary fiction. And independent comic shops play much the same role as other independent bookstores: curating what readers see, introducing them to new voices and creating a place for people who love stories to gather.
Big Planet Comics has been doing that in Bethesda since 1986. Its shelves are filled with new comics, graphic novels, collected editions, back issues and independent titles, with plenty to explore whether you have been reading comics for decades or are just curious about the form.
Find it: Norfolk Avenue, Bethesda
What you’ll find: Comics, graphic novels, collected editions, back issues and independent titles.
